Mrs Meg Avon, married to the river June 2023

I am Meg - celebrant, poet, activist, performance artist, environmental romantic, and the woman who famously married the River Avon, one of the most polluted rivers in the UK.

No, me and my beloved are not currently married by law. But the law is a storied thing and my marriage is influencing the rewriting of that story.

“There is nothing more powerful than vows infront of witnesses, especially if spoken from the heart infront of your community. Love is everything.”

Book the Bride as celebrant for your ceremony

Getting married? Having a Hand Fasting? Becoming your partner’s power of Attorney? Announcing your love of Nature? I have five years of experience speaking publically and holding space within communities for important moments to be shared and celebrated.

Support my campaign for the river whislt making your own ceremony truly unique.

My Wedding

My unconventional union is a symbolic act of love and protest, spotlighting my deep connection to the river and the urgent need to protect our waterways.

On my wedding day, I vowed infront of witnesses to love and care for the river - as it cares for me -

“until death do us part”.

Since the wedding I have published my first collection of poetry My Avon and toured the UK, speaking publically and passionately on behalf of my beloved.

My ambition is to help find a way that this river, the Bristol Urban Avon, can help people fall in love for thousands of years to come.

Through poetry, through peformance, through cermony and through conversation - always with a focus on joy and union.
